New Zealand Passport Technology Accused Of Racism

The New Zealand’s government online passport renewal software was accused of being racist when it refused to recognise an asian man’s eyes.

Richard, a Kiwi of asian descent was unable to renew his passport online because of the size of his eyes. A humiliating warning message popped up saying,

“The photo you want to upload does not meet our criteria because: Subject eyes are closed”.

The New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs explained that the software was

“one of the most technologically advanced in the world”

and according to them,

“The most common error is a subject’s eyes being closed and that was the generic error message sent in that case.”

The spokesperson also mentioned that they have confidence in the reliability of their system and is not designed to discriminate anyone.

Picture: Richard shortly uploaded a comical version of himself on Facebook.

Maybe the guys responsible for writing the online passport renewal photograph recognition algorithm for the New Zealand’s government can learn from Huffington Post on doing a similar survey they did on men’s phallus but on the eyes? Idea?
