Heavy Smog Grounds 20,000 in Chengdu Airport

Chengdu is some 1800KM away from Beijing and it takes just over 3 hours by flight. The city is home to the famous Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a conservation center where visitors can view endangered giant pandas in a natural habitat.

Unfortunately, the people and pandas of Chengdu were covered in Smog a few days ago. According to airport officials, it is one of the worst pollution Shuangliu International Airport has seen in years. Many flights were cancelled and others were forced to land at nearby airports. Shuangliu was closed for nearly 10 hours and has disrupted record number of flights and passengers in years. 

The air quality at Chengdu was measured at 280 but Beijing was nearly 3 times higher at 875. According to the air quality chart, Chengdu’s air quality was considered to be “very unhealthy” and Beijing’s index was way off the chart.
