Kunming is one of those cities that’s easy to explore when you’re staying in the right part of town, and Four Points by Sheraton Downtown Kunming makes a great base for doing exactly that. The hotel sits in a convenient downtown location with shopping, transport and many of the city’s attractions within easy reach, making it simple to explore whether you’re visiting for a few days or using Kunming as a starting point for exploring Yunnan. It’s a recently rebranded Marriott property and shares the same building as Atour Hotel, a popular Chinese mid-scale hotel brand known for its modern design, comfortable rooms and strong domestic following. The two hotels operate independently with separate reception areas and facilities, so apart from entering the same building, there is little overlap during the stay.

The location is easily the biggest advantage of this hotel. Situated in downtown Kunming, it places you right in the middle of the city’s shopping, dining and cultural areas. Two major shopping centres, Kunming Department Store and Brilliant Plaza, are located just steps away, making it extremely convenient for shopping, picking up essentials or simply spending some time indoors. Brilliant Plaza in particular offers a more upscale shopping environment, with a selection of international brands and a more modern mall atmosphere. Beyond the malls, the hotel is also close to the lively pedestrian streets around Nanping Street, where you can spend the evening walking around and experiencing the local atmosphere. The area becomes especially enjoyable after dark, with plenty of street food stalls offering a taste of Yunnan flavours and local snacks. It is the kind of location where you can walk out of the hotel and immediately start exploring, whether you want to shop, try local food or experience the energy of central Kunming. Getting around beyond the immediate area is also convenient, with taxis and ride-hailing services easily available.

As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, I was upgraded to a Premium Room on one of the highest floors. While the different room categories on the hotel website appear quite similar in terms of size and layout, the biggest benefit of the upgraded room was definitely the higher floor and the impressive views over Kunming. Looking out across the city in the morning and seeing the lights after sunset added something special to the stay. The room itself was comfortable, modern and practical, with a good-sized bed, a clean bathroom and all the essentials needed for a relaxing visit. It is not a luxury-style room, but it was well maintained and provided everything expected from a reliable Marriott property.
The design of the room is simple and functional rather than distinctive, but that works well for travellers who spend most of their time exploring the city. The bed was comfortable, the room was quiet, and housekeeping kept everything in excellent condition throughout the stay. The bathroom had a good shower with strong water pressure, and the overall cleanliness was exactly what you would expect from a recently rebranded hotel.

The hotel also provides the practical facilities that make longer stays easier. The gym is a useful addition for guests who want to maintain their routine while travelling, with enough equipment for a basic workout. A self-service laundry facility is also available, which is particularly convenient for guests travelling for an extended period or exploring Yunnan as part of a longer trip. These are simple but valuable amenities that add to the overall convenience of the hotel.

Breakfast was another highlight of the stay. The buffet offered a good mix of Chinese and Western choices, with enough variety to keep things interesting over multiple mornings. There were freshly prepared egg dishes, noodles, steamed items, hot dishes, fruit, pastries and coffee available. The quality was consistently good, and the food was replenished regularly even during busy breakfast periods. It was not an extravagant hotel breakfast, but it was satisfying and provided a great start before heading out to explore Kunming.

Service throughout the hotel was friendly and professional. The staff were welcoming from arrival and always willing to assist with requests or directions. My Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite benefits were recognised, and the upgrade was appreciated. Although the hotel has only recently joined the Four Points brand, the overall operation already felt smooth and organised. The shared building arrangement with Atour Hotel did not affect the experience, and the hotel maintained its own identity and service standards.
One thing worth noting is that because this is a recently rebranded property, some online information may still refer to the hotel’s previous name or appearance. However, the transition to Four Points by Sheraton appears to have been handled well. The rooms, service and facilities all felt consistent with what Marriott guests would expect from this brand category.
Overall, Four Points by Sheraton Downtown Kunming is a very solid choice for travellers looking for convenience, comfort and value. The hotel may not compete with Kunming’s luxury properties, but it delivers where it matters most: an excellent central location, comfortable accommodation, a good breakfast, useful facilities and reliable service. For Marriott Bonvoy members, especially those with elite status, a high-floor room with great city views makes the experience even better. Whether visiting Kunming for sightseeing, business or as part of a wider Yunnan trip, this hotel provides an easy and comfortable place to stay.
