CNBC Ranks the Best Hotels in Asia-Pacific and Why We Think Some Are Rubbish

CNBC has teamed up with market and consumer data firm Statista to come with the the 2022 Best Hotels for Business Travellers in Asia-Pacific. According to them, more than 10,000 four- and five-star hotels in 117 locations were graded using the following processes:

  • CNBC’s business travellers and hotel industry professionals reader survey
  • Objective reviews such as location, business facilities, food, leisure activities and room characteristics
  • Subjective reviews on Google, TripAdvisor, Expedia and similar websites
  • Allocating marks based on the value of importance gathered in the reader survey

We have selected some of the highlights and listed them below, however, we have serious doubts regarding some of the hotels ranked by them. For instance, The Branksome Hotel & residences in Sydney Australia, this is a limited service hotel located across the domestic airport terminal. Unless people are flying in and out the next day, I don’t see a reason why people would choose to stay there considering the limited industries/offices/factories in that area.

On the other hand, we can concur that the Four-Seasons Hotel in Singapore getting the top spot although the location isn’t all business focused, but we are conflicted with the third spot being awarded to Holiday Inn Orchard City Centre which again like the Four Seasons is located in a predominantly leisure focused area instead of the business district. Hilton Orchard is a much better option in the same area.

Although we feel like the hotels in Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo and Osaka are deserving of recognition but again are doubtful that the sample size surveyed in Kuala Lumpur is sufficiently experienced. The Sofitel may deserve the top ranking with its luxurious amenities but being located so far away from the CBD in a ‘second-tier’ at best (more like tertiary) business area gives us doubt that they can deliver top-notch business services. The Hyatt House beating both the Shangri-La and the newest jewel in the business hub, the EQ, truly raises our eyebrows because how can a limited service hotel be compared to these truly upscale full service hotels.

These so called “Best of” lists, in our opinion, is highly subjective and results are often biased based on the audiences responses hence unless a survey is done across a large sample size of audiences of varying backgrounds, we generally take these lists with a pinch of salt.

Flight Review: TK168 Turkish Airlines Singapore-Melbourne Economy Class (Inaugural)

On March 2, 2024, TK168 departed from Singapore to Melbourne. Due to a last-minute rescheduling, the flight was light, with only around 50 passengers in Economy. However, Business Class appeared full, likely due to VIPs and media accompanying Dr. Ahmet Bolat, the Chairman of Turkish Airlines. The entire Business Class section was reserved for VIPs.
