Bali still sells out on public holidays. What has changed is the map. From Singapore you can now fly nonstop to Indonesian islands that most travellers cannot pronounce on the first try. Belitung is the one worth learning.
Scoot’s new link turned a name on a chart into a Friday-night departure. Local hotels that saw a handful of Singapore guests in a month suddenly counted them in the hundreds. That is not a marketing slogan. It is what happens when a three-hour flight replaces a ferry-plus-propeller scramble.

Why Belitung, not another Seminyak copy
Belitung sits off Sumatra’s east coast, closer in spirit to Bangka than to Ubud. The coastline is granite boulders, powder sand and water that stays clear even after rain. Tanjung Kelayang, now a tourism special economic zone, is the easy base: beach clubs without the traffic, snorkel boats that leave on time, and seafood grilled the same evening it came in.
This is not “untouched paradise” theatre. There are sealed roads, ATMs in Tanjung Pandan, and hotels that already know how to check in a Singapore family at midnight. The difference is density. You can walk a beach at 4pm in August and still hear the surf.
Pontianak and Padang are the other new dots on the Singapore–Indonesia board. Pontianak is a river city and a gateway to West Kalimantan food, not a beach break. Padang is nasi padang’s hometown and a jumping-off point for the Mentawai if you have extra days. Use them as add-ons. Use Belitung as the point of the trip.
A three-night plan that actually fits a long weekend
Night 1 — Land and lower the volume.
Fly afternoon, transfer to Tanjung Kelayang (about an hour). Swim before dinner. Order grilled fish, not a tasting menu. Sleep with the balcony door open if the hotel allows it.
Day 2 — Island hop, then stop.
Book a small-boat circuit: Pulau Lengkuas for the old lighthouse and snorkelling, then a sandbar island for lunch. Insist on a mid-afternoon return. The light on the granite coast is the postcard; you only get it if you are not still circling the last islet.
Day 3 — Slow inland, early airport.
If you have a late flight, drive to a pepper plantation or the colonial tin-mining traces around Tanjung Pandan. Belitung’s wealth was metal before it was tourism. That history is more interesting than another infinity pool.
Pack reef-safe sunscreen, cash for boat crews, and shoes you can wet. The granite is sharp in places.
Who this trip is for (and who should skip it)
Good for: couples and families who want beach time without Bali’s Saturday scooter gridlock; photographers who prefer rock and water to rice terraces; anyone who has already done Lombok and is bored of the same villa template.
Skip if: you need nightlife after 11pm, a full spa menu, or guaranteed five-star international brands on every corner. The inventory is improving — Accor-family properties in Pontianak reported a sharp jump in Singapore stays after Scoot launched — but Belitung is still mid-scale plus a few nicer resorts, not a mega-integrated strip.
Practical details that save the weekend
Direct flights are still thin. If the Saturday morning service is full, look at Friday night or a via-Jakarta backup, then protect the return with travel insurance that covers schedule change, not just cancellation.
Dry season is roughly May to September; September still works if you accept a brief squall. October onwards can be wetter. Boat trips cancel when the wind is up, so keep Day 2 movable.
Indonesian visa-on-arrival or visa-free rules depend on your passport. Australians and many ASEAN travellers are used to simple entry, but confirm the current length of stay before you buy a non-refundable hotel. Bring a passport with six months’ validity. Download offline maps; signal drops between beaches.
Eat at the warungs near the harbour as well as the resort restaurant. Pepper crab and fresh squid will outperform a generic club sandwich every time. Drink bottled water. Agree the boat price before you leave the beach.
The bigger shift
Australian and Singaporean travellers have been quietly rerouting leisure away from long-haul Europe while Gulf hubs stay messy. Short-haul Indonesia is absorbing that demand — not only Bali. Seventeen direct Indonesian destinations from Singapore would have sounded implausible a few years ago. The winners are the islands that already had the beaches and only lacked the aircraft.
Belitung will not stay quiet forever. Special economic zones attract the next wave of resorts. Go while the boat still has empty seats and the beach still has space between umbrellas. Book the flight first, the hotel second, and leave one afternoon unscheduled. That empty afternoon is the reason you did not go back to Kuta.
