Hotel Review: Hualuxe Xian Tanghua Hotel, Xian

Date:

As an IHG Diamond member, I have stayed at many IHG properties around the world, so it takes something special for a hotel to truly stand out. HUALUXE Xi’an Tanghua did exactly that. From the moment we arrived until the day we checked out, this was a stay that exceeded my expectations. I had booked two standard rooms under my name and was genuinely surprised when the hotel upgraded both rooms to one-bedroom suites. I was expecting perhaps one upgrade at best, so receiving two was an incredibly generous gesture and immediately made us feel valued as loyal IHG members.

The arrival experience set the tone for the entire stay. Check-in was smooth, professional and welcoming, but what made it particularly memorable was being personally escorted to our rooms by the Head Concierge. Instead of simply showing us the facilities, he took the time to explain the history of the hotel, the architectural design and the surrounding attractions. His passion for the property and Xi’an was obvious, and his introduction made us appreciate that we were staying somewhere much more meaningful than a typical luxury hotel.

Learning about the history of the property made the experience even more special. Although it now operates as HUALUXE Xi’an Tanghua under IHG, the hotel has its origins in the famous Tanghua Hotel, which was designed in 1986 by Zhang Jinqiu, one of China’s most influential architects and the designer behind the Shaanxi History Museum. She is widely recognised as one of the pioneers of modern Neo-Tang architecture, creating buildings that reinterpret the elegance of the Tang Dynasty while meeting the needs of modern life. The Tanghua Hotel was part of the ambitious “Three Tang Projects”, a cultural development designed to showcase the glory of the Tang Dynasty alongside the nearby Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. At that time, China was still in the early stages of opening to the world, and international tourism was far more limited than today. Hotels of this quality were uncommon and mainly welcomed overseas visitors, official delegations and business travellers. Rather than creating a typical large hotel building, Zhang designed Tanghua as a series of elegant pavilions, courtyards and gardens inspired by traditional Chinese residences. The result is a property that feels connected to history rather than simply decorated with historical elements.

The hotel itself is absolutely stunning. The architecture is one of its greatest strengths, with traditional Chinese design elements beautifully combined with modern luxury. The buildings are arranged around peaceful courtyards, gardens and waterways, creating an atmosphere that feels timeless. The sweeping tiled roofs, wooden structures, covered walkways and intricate details are all carefully designed and proportioned. Walking through the property, it is easy to understand why this hotel is considered such an important example of modern Chinese architecture inspired by the Tang Dynasty.

Another feature that really impressed me was the artwork throughout the hotel. Rather than filling the space with generic decorations, HUALUXE Xi’an Tanghua showcases artwork that reflects the cultural heritage of Shaanxi and the Tang Dynasty. During our walk around the property, the Head Concierge explained that many of the displayed pieces are museum-quality replicas based on archaeological discoveries from Shaanxi Province, with the original artefacts preserved in museums such as the Shaanxi History Museum. The collection includes sculptures, ceramics, carvings and decorative works that tell stories about the region’s history. Every piece feels carefully selected to complement the architecture. Walking through the lobby and corridors almost feels like visiting a small museum, with something interesting to discover around every corner.

Our one-bedroom suites were exceptional. They were far larger than expected, with a separate living area, spacious bedroom and plenty of room to relax. The suites felt more like luxury apartments than hotel rooms. The interior design continued the Chinese theme found throughout the property, with elegant wooden furniture, traditional artwork, warm lighting and beautiful decorative details. The style was refined and tasteful, never feeling excessive or artificial. At the same time, all modern comforts were available, making the suite both comfortable and practical. After a full day exploring Xi’an, returning to such a peaceful and spacious room was a real pleasure.

The hotel grounds are one of the highlights of the entire experience. Beautiful gardens surround the buildings, with tranquil ponds, traditional bridges, quiet pathways and carefully maintained landscaping. The grounds create a sense of calm that feels completely separate from the busy city outside. Morning and evening walks around the property were some of the most enjoyable moments of the stay. Every corner offers another beautiful view, whether it is a traditional pavilion reflected in the water, a quiet courtyard filled with greenery or a perfectly framed architectural scene.

HUALUXE Xi’an Tanghua is also one of the most photogenic hotels I have visited. Almost every part of the property provides a beautiful backdrop for photographs. One of the unique experiences in Xi’an is renting traditional Hanfu clothing and taking photos while exploring historic locations. Wearing Hanfu among the Tang Dynasty-inspired buildings and gardens creates incredible photographs that feel like stepping back in time. The combination of the architecture, gardens and traditional clothing makes this hotel especially appealing for anyone who enjoys photography or sharing travel experiences online. It is genuinely one of the most Instagrammable hotels in China.

The location is another major advantage. The hotel is located in the Qujiang cultural district, close to some of Xi’an’s most famous attractions. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, Tang Paradise and the Grand Tang Mall are all nearby, making it extremely convenient for sightseeing. The area is especially beautiful in the evening when the lights come on and the streets become filled with performances and visitors enjoying the atmosphere. Having such important cultural attractions within easy reach made exploring Xi’an much easier and more enjoyable.

The service throughout our stay was excellent. Every staff member we met was friendly, professional and genuinely helpful. The concierge team, reception staff, housekeeping and restaurant employees all demonstrated pride in the hotel and their city. The personal attention from the Head Concierge was particularly memorable because he did more than provide information; he helped us understand the history and meaning behind the place we were staying.

Breakfast was another highlight. As IHG Diamond members, we had access to a private breakfast area, which provided a quieter and more relaxed dining experience. The breakfast selection was impressive, with a huge variety of Chinese and Western options. There were freshly prepared noodles, dumplings, steamed buns, eggs, pastries, fruit, salads, cereals and many local specialties. The quality was consistently high, and the selection was large enough that you could enjoy something different every morning.

The fitness centre is relatively small but perfectly adequate. The equipment was clean, modern and well maintained, making it easy to keep up with a workout while travelling. The hotel does not have a swimming pool, which some guests may consider a drawback, but personally it did not affect our stay. With so much history, beautiful gardens and attractions nearby, there was always something better to explore.

Overall, HUALUXE Xi’an Tanghua was one of the most memorable hotel stays I have experienced. The unexpected upgrades for both rooms were a fantastic recognition of IHG Diamond loyalty, but the true highlight was the entire experience of staying somewhere with such history, culture and character. From the Tang Dynasty-inspired architecture and museum-quality artwork to the beautiful gardens, outstanding service, excellent breakfast and unbeatable location, this hotel offers far more than accommodation. It allows guests to experience a piece of Xi’an’s history while enjoying the comfort of a luxury hotel. I would happily return and would strongly recommend HUALUXE Xi’an Tanghua to anyone visiting Xi’an, especially fellow IHG members looking for a truly unique stay.
